Joining Us

The clubs membership is restricted to 35 members. We may have to operate a waiting list. The first thing to do is to contact the club secretary at admin@scmfc.co.uk to check if there are spaces available.

One of the most common questions asked is what model should I get. There are lots of trainers about. One which has been popular and showed the best results is the Ready 2 by ARC. Please look at the following website for details http://www.ripmax.com/item.asp?itemid=A-ARC1002

A good engine in an SC 46 or 52.

There are several model shops that sell the model. Perhaps try http://www.alshobbies.com

Another common question is what radio should I get. 2.4 GHz is probably the best way to go. 35 MHz sets are still very popular but can be more prone to interference problems, but it is still very early days with 2.4 GHz. Perhaps consider a radio like the Futaba 6EX-FASST 2.4Ghz Radio-Full Set. Another popular radio is the slightly more expensive Spektrum 2.4.

Have a good look at all the websites before making a decision, you could also email us for advice.

You will be required to obtain BMFA insurance, which we can do for you or you can apply directly to the BMFA.org

Training - Club Plan

The club is currently offering free training to new members without prior experience of flying Radio Controlled Aircraft.

Normally, new members who learn to fly Radio Controlled helicopters will teach themselves. There is not currently a test required to fly helicopters.

All new members will start their training with Gary - the club secretary. Initial checking and a flight test will be conducted with new models. Then a period of basic 'in the air' training will be conducted by Gary for an hour or so. Then new members will be allocated a club member - official trainer - to help 'hours build'. This is the most time consuming part of learning to fly model aircraft and the most important. Before more complicated procedures like taking off and landing can be practised, total confidence and ability must be shown by the trainee of flying at low levels.

Gary or your allocated trainer will then help with take off and landings. All training must be organised in advance of the visit to the flying site. We cant guarantee any help - just turning up.

The list of contacts for training are as follows:

Pre-flight Check. Take off, low pass, figure of 8 & dead stick landing.
